Long-Distance Road Trips with the Tesla Model Y

Long-distance trips with a Tesla? For many, that might sound like a challenge, but a father-son adventure this summer proved quite the opposite. The goal? A 17-day journey from Munich to the North Cape—the northernmost point of Europe—and back. Equipped with a Tesla Model Y, a Veltyx mattress, and a Tesla tent, they covered the 8,153-kilometer journey and experienced the freedom of a true road trip.
Now, you might be wondering: How do you prepare for such a long drive, and what should you keep in mind? In this article, we’ll answer these questions based on the North Cape trip of our customers, so you can soon plan your own adventure with Veltyx.

Preparing for Your Trip

If you want to rent a Tesla Model Y LR, known for its comfort and long range, for a long-distance trip, Veltyx is the right place for you. Choose your dream destination and easily submit a request via our website, selecting your preferred start and end date. The earlier you submit the request, the better! This way, you can ensure that your desired Tesla model will be available.

Route Planning & Renting Your Vehicle

Let’s take Munich to the North Cape as an example: the route from Munich to the North Cape and back is around 8,153 kilometers and passes through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway.
Thanks to the Tesla Supercharger network, planning and completing such a long trip is significantly easier. Based on the distance and your desired stopover locations, you can plan your travel time and book your vehicle for the necessary period.

Daily Route Planning & Stopovers

Like other destinations, a road trip to the North Cape stretches across several daily stages. With the Tesla Model Y, it's easy to plan routes individually and tailor them to your personal preferences. Do you have a specific place you don't want to miss along the way? Plan it into your route and navigate your vehicle there using regional Supercharger stations! For our travel team, amazing hikes and sightseeing experiences were on the agenda, allowing them to fully enjoy the Scandinavian landscape.
We recommend carefully planning your daily routes and charging stops to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Additional Kilometer Package

Please note: Driving long distances means many hours on the road. Therefore, it’s advisable to book an additional kilometer package with Veltyx so you can enjoy the trip worry-free. This planning ensures that you have enough kilometers available and can comfortably cover the distance without constantly checking the odometer.

Tesla Camping with Gear or Prefer Booking Accommodations?

To complete your road trip experience, you should also decide whether you want to sleep in the car or in accommodations. If you don’t want to sleep exclusively in the Tesla, you can book campsites and cabins along the route in advance. Especially during the peak season, many places are fully booked.
If you plan to sleep in the car, Veltyx offers sleep accessories. The right gear is essential for a comfortable road trip. With Veltyx camping gear, including a mattress and a Tesla tent, you’ll be well-prepared. You can check out our range of additional items available for rental.
In the case of the North Cape travelers, a combination of Tesla camping and cabin stays was chosen. This mix provided variety and allowed them to experience the beauty of Scandinavia in different ways.
Additionally, before their departure, they booked a blackout set for all windows from Veltyx, as it never really gets dark at the North Cape during the summer. This set ensures you can sleep well despite the midnight sun. For winter road trips, the coverings also offer excellent insulation against the cold.

Ferry, Toll, and Vignette Fees

Not every route is easily drivable. Before you start your journey, always check for any fees you might encounter along the way to avoid surprises.
This was especially true for our North Cape travelers. The ferry crossing had to be booked before departure. To make the route to Scandinavia more efficient, the ferry from Rostock to Trelleborg is a great option. During vacation periods, ferry spots are often quickly booked, so it's best to secure your crossing early for a smooth start to your trip. This water crossing not only shortens the driving time but also provides a relaxing break with a fantastic view during your road trip.

Energy Consumption, Total Costs, and Charging Efficiency

On their total journey of 8,153 kilometers, the Tesla Model Y Long Range consumed about 1,421 kWh of energy. The average consumption was around 17.4 kWh per 100 kilometers, highlighting the high efficiency of this model on long trips. By comparison, the standard Tesla Model Y, like the Standard Range version, is also very efficient but has a shorter range, requiring more frequent charging stops on long trips.
The Model Y Long Range, with its larger battery, offers a range of about 533 kilometers (WLTP), while the Standard Range model has around 455 kilometers. Thanks to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, the trip was completed without worrying about the battery level—a significant advantage of the Long Range model, which requires fewer charging pauses than the standard version.

Charging Prices in Different Countries

The charging costs you’ll encounter on a long-distance trip vary depending on the country you’re driving through.
Here is a breakdown of the Supercharger prices per kWh based on the experience of our Scandinavian travelers:
  • Germany: €0.41 - €0.48 per kWh
  • Denmark: 2.00 - 2.20 DKK per kWh
  • Sweden: 4.95 - 5.5 SEK per kWh
  • Norway: 3.9 - 4.35 NOK per kWh
  • Finland: €0.41 - €0.45 per kWh

The total charging cost for the entire trip was about €625, making the cost of such a journey in an electric vehicle significantly cheaper than in a traditional combustion engine car. This makes long-distance travel in a Tesla not only more environmentally friendly but also economically attractive and advantageous.

Charging Times and Efficiency

Charging times at Superchargers vary depending on the battery level and the power of the charging stations at each location, ranging between 15 and 40 minutes. Thanks to the Tesla Model Y’s built-in navigation system, necessary charging breaks are optimally integrated into route planning, so you’ll never find yourself stranded with an empty battery. Use these breaks to relax, enjoy a coffee, or take a walk in the surrounding area.
The combination of efficient energy consumption, a dense network of Superchargers, and comparatively low charging costs makes Tesla an ideal companion for long-distance journeys. Even on a demanding route like the one to the North Cape and back, charging was hassle-free and economical—a further testament that road trips in an electric vehicle are not only possible but also highly comfortable and cost-effective.
